40 Days

Take Time to Listen

In this holy season of Lent, we make a pilgrimage with Christ through the desert, as he makes his way to a fateful Jerusalem. As we hear his story and contemplate his teaching, we engage in reflection and self-assessment, and we practice the art of listening to the voice of God as spoken through the prayers and concerns of one another.

Prayer

Gracious God, you have bound us together in common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for health, equity, justice, and truth, to listen to one another without hatred, bitterness, or bias, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Call to Action

We remember the poor, and we consider how we might be of deeper service to those around us, especially when, in this era, the need is so very great.

Consider the following as part of your Lenten discipline:

If you plan to give something up for Lent, donate the cost of that item to Canterbury or a charity of your choice.

Donate 5-10% of your weekly grocery bill to Canterbury or a charity of your choice.

Each day in Lent, remove one item from your closet that you no longer wear or need and put into a trash bag. At the end of the forty days, donate these items to a charity that can share them with someone who can really use them.

Suggested Charities:
All Faiths Children’s Advocacy
Covenant House
Domestic Violence Resource Center
Roadrunner Foodbank
Saranam

Blessing

The Wisdom of God, the Love of God, and the Grace of God, strengthen to be Christ’s hands and hearts (and ears) in this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen.
